GCAS set to further support regional Indoor and Beach Volleyball

The Surfers Paradise beachfront and the Gold Coast round of the Renault National Beach Volleyball Series was the ideal location to announce the ongoing support to the GCAS Indoor and Beach Volleyball programs in 2012 for the region’s pre-elite athletes.

Late in 2011, the GCAS supported an 8-week trial Indoor program for 43 athletes and a Beach Volleyball camp with Head Coach Steve Anderson and guest coach Olympic Gold medallist Natalie Cook amongst the experienced coaches on hand. Cook competed in the National Series with current partner Tasmin Hinchley. Together they won the Grand Final much to the delight of the GCAS members and the large crowd that came in support. Cook’s former Olympic Gold medal partner Kerri Pottharst also pledged support to the GCAS athletes in the future at a come’n'try clinic that she ran for new players to the sport.

“Given all of this support from highly qualified coaches and current high profile athletes in the sport together with the dedication locally of individuals such as GCAS Volleyball Director of Instruction Aaron Alsop, Indoor Head Coach Andrew McCaskill and Beach Volleyball Coach Adam Thornley, the Academy is excited about further supporting the expansion of opportunities for the sport in the region. Hopefully even more athletes this year will form teams in the new Gold Coast Volleyball League as well.” explained GCAS Executive Officer Robert Thompson.

“Plans have been finalised and applications are now open for the continuation of the Indoor program that is set to resume on Tuesday 7th February at the St. Hilda’s Multi-Purpose Centre, Whitby Street, Southport at 5.15pm. There will be separate sessions for boys and girls and a regular strength and conditioning component will also be built into the program.” added GCAS Director of Instruction and former QLD Volleyball athlete and coach Aaron Alsop. The GCAS Beach Volleyball Program is set to launch Sunday 11th March.

For enquiries about athlete or program assistant applications in the GCAS Volleyball program, please contact the GCAS Executive Officer on 0418 846621. Potential sponsors are encouraged to contact the GCAS Manager-Commercial Operations Mr Mick Ellison on 0414 755305.

GCAS Volleyball squad recognised

2nd Annual Gold Coast Academy of Sport Awards Night

Tonight will see the squad of the GCAS Volleyball Program recognised along with athletes from the other 7 programs for their efforts for 2011. With over 100 athletes & 200 special guests, staff, coaches, council, sponsors & board members it will be a very exciting night for Gold Coast Sport.

The Volleyball Program now boasts as one of the largest sports in the Academy. Its coaches & athletes are excited to be a part of what will be a significant event. Not only will this opportunity show to the community of the Gold Coast what our program is delivering to young & aspiring volleyball athletes, it will also show that without support from local business, council & GCAS staff & coaches, potential state & national players from the Gold Coast region wouldn’t be receiving the same opportunities as those who reside in Brisbane & metro areas.

Gold Coast Volleyball is proud to be partnering with the Gold Coast Academy of Sport to deliver the Volleyball Program & is excited to be soon announcing the GCAS Beach Volleyball Program for  2011/12.

Finally Congratulations to all athletes & we hope you celebrate what will be your night!
